Rehearsal Diary: Week 1

By Ebenezer Bamgboye

This week, we did lots of active contextual (recording) work. This comprised of us receording each scene, playing it out loud, and actors moving around the space being either compelled, repelled or impelled in relation to the other characters in the space.

This served to deepen our understadning of all the relationships between characters and learn about what is going on beneath all the scenes in Act 1. Caroline took some of this new knowledge into conversation with Chris Bush who, according to it, made some textual modifications. All in all, this has put us in good stead ti get the first act on its feet next week, wherein we shall begin to stage it properly.

The week also began with some introductions; to one another, the building and the piece! Caroline and Ana did a design presentation which was followed by a read through just so the company and many key figures from the Lyric and Headlong could hear the piece.

Foregoing the typical ‘week of table work’ however, our director Caroline preferred to go straight in with work on its feet. From day two we began doing lots of active contextual (recording) work. This comprised of us recording each scene, playing it out loud, and actors moving around the space being either compelled, repelled or impelled in relation to other characters in the space. This served to deepen our understanding of all the relationships between characters and learn about what is going on beneath all the scenes in Act 1. Caroline took some of this new knowledge into conversation with Chris who, according to it, made some textual modifications. All in all, this has put us in good stead to get the first act on its feet next week, wherein we will stage it properly.

In the midst of all this, we also found time for a session with Chris Bush, who answered any and every question we put to her on the play. This, coupled with in depth research on the wall about all the time periods in the play, gave the cast a thorough contextual understanding, ready and raring to start staging next week.
