Rupert has been Artistic Director of Headlong since 2005. Previously he was Associate Director at the Royal Shakespeare Company and Artistic Director of Northampton Theatres.
He takes over as Artistic Director of the Almeida Theatre later this year.
His productions for Headlong include The Effect, Earthquakes in London (National), Decade (St Katharine Docks), and the multi-award winning ENRON, for which he won the 2009 Olivier, Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle awards for Best Director, King Lear, Six Characters in Search of an Author, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Rough Crossings, Faustus, Restoration and Paradise Lost.
Other theatre credits include: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (Kensington Gardens), Oliver! (Theatre Royal Drury Lane), No Man’s Land (Duke of York’s - Irish Times Award Best Director), Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice (RSC), and the award-winning Macbeth (Chichester/West End/Brooklyn Academy of Music/Broadway) for which he won the 2007 Olivier, Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle awards for Best Director.
Film credits include: Macbeth (BBC) and Richard II (BBC), for which he won the Peabody Award.
