Matthew's play The Whipping Man has become one of the more regularly-produced new American plays in recent years. For this production, Matthew received the John Gassner Playwrighting Award by the New York Outer Critics Circle. He holds new play commissions from Roundabout Theatre Company and The Old Globe, where he is Artist-in-Residence. He is a New York Theatre Workshop Usual Suspect and a recent member of the Ars Nova Playgroup.
